Excerpt from novel in progress, Taking Flight

This is a small excerpt from my novel in progress, Taking Flight. This story is about Geek, a wild budgerigar in the Australian outback. Geek ‘takes flight’ and leaves the family gum tree in search of bigger and better things in the wide, unknown world.

Chapter 1 – Geek

Geek stretched her wings and slowly blinked as sunlight spilled through the leaves of her tree. She had woken from a dream, one that had been recurring every night for almost a month. In her dream, she had been soaring beneath the radiating sun, feeling the wind rustling through her feathers as she looked down at the world below her. It all seemed so far away, though she was only 20 metres above the ground. She could see the humans going about their daily business below, the horses in a neighbouring paddock cheekily eating apples off a tree, and she could smell the sweet scent of the town bakery below. Her mind wandered as she imagined what tasty treats had been baked in the early hours of the morning. Cinnamon twists, homemade sausage rolls, and her favourite, apple pies with fine sugar sprinkled on top.

Then suddenly she was plummeting, faster and faster toward the ground below. She looked down and saw the trees and the dirt and grass covered earth getting closer, and frantically, she tried to fly, but it was futile. The more Geek beat her wings, the faster she fell and finally, her tiny body exhausted, she gave up. In an instant, just as suddenly as she had fallen, she was soaring upward again, only she wasn’t moving her wings. Confused, Geek looked around and then she saw him. A majestic budgie, larger than her petite self, and stunningly yellow, with rich black markings on his wings. He was flying below and lifting her up, almost effortlessly. His eye caught hers and she could see her reflection in them. They were deep and expressive, and the whole time he lifted her high into the sky, she stared into them, feeling like she’d always known him. She knew at that moment she was safe.
